Carbon emissions by transport type
Road vehicles, particularly light-duty trucks, are the largest source of transportation-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, accounting for 37% of total emissions. Following road vehicles, medium and heavy-duty trucks (23%), passenger cars (20%), and commercial aircraft (7%) are also significant contributors.
- In the U.S., light-duty trucks (SUVs, pickup trucks, minivans) are the largest source, followed by medium and heavy-duty trucks and passenger cars.
- Commercial aircraft are a significant contributor, with other aircraft making up a smaller percentage.
- Pipelines (4%), ships and boats (3%), and rail (2%) also contribute to overall transportation emissions.
- Road transport accounts for a majority of transportation-related emissions worldwide, with shipping being a significant contributor.
- While total transportation emissions have increased due to factors like population growth and economic development, improvements in fuel economy have helped to slow the rate of increase.
