Opinion on Prof. Dr. Boediono's Book"Indonesian Economy in Historical Perspective"
By: Ir. Sugeng Endarsiwi ST., IPM., M.A.P., EMBA., ASEAN Eng., ACPE
From the perspective of a reader with a background in Industrial Engineering, a Master's degree in Public Administration, and professional experience in the printing industry from 2000 to 2026, my assessment of Prof. Dr. Boediono's book is as follows.
Overall Impression
This book is more than a history of the Indonesian economy.
It serves as a roadmap for understanding how Indonesia's current economic
landscape was shaped. Its greatest strength lies in the combination of academic
rigor and practical insights from the author's direct involvement in national
economic policymaking for several decades. The book traces Indonesia's economic
journey from the colonial era to modern times, emphasizing the interplay
between economics, politics, and institutions. [books.google.com],

From an Industrial Engineer's Perspective
As an Industrial Engineering graduate, I find the book
particularly valuable because it explains how economic policies influence
national productivity, industrial development, investment, infrastructure, and
resource efficiency.
One of the most compelling sections discusses Indonesia's
transition from heavy dependence on oil revenues toward the development of
non-oil sectors during the 1980s and 1990s. From a manufacturing perspective,
these policy shifts laid the foundation for the growth of many industries,
including printing, packaging, and their supporting sectors. [books.google.com]
The book clearly demonstrates that industrial success
depends not only on technology and production capacity but also on
macroeconomic stability, trade policies, and the quality of public
institutions. As someone who works closely with manufacturing operations and
supply chains, I find these insights highly relevant.
From a Public Administration Perspective
As a graduate of Public Administration, I believe the most
valuable aspect of the book is its discussion of the relationship between
economics and politics. Boediono repeatedly highlights the trade-offs between
economic objectives and political goals, emphasizing the importance of
maintaining a balance between the two. [store.tempo.co],

In public administration practice, we often observe that
policies that are economically sound are not always politically acceptable. The
book provides numerous historical examples of how governments have navigated
such dilemmas.
For policymakers, public officials, and business leaders
alike, the book offers an important lesson: economic development is not merely
about growth figures, but also about governance, institutional strength,
political stability, and public trust.
From the Perspective of a Printing Industry Professional
(2000-2026)
Having spent more than two decades in the printing and
packaging industry, I have experienced firsthand:
- The
post-1998 economic recovery,
- The
consumption and packaging boom of the 2000s,
- The
2008 global financial crisis,
- The
rise of digital transformation,
- The
COVID-19 pandemic,
- And
the continued evolution of the packaging industry through 2026.
Many of the explanations in this book help answer a question
that every business practitioner eventually asks: Why does the market change
the way it does?
The printing and packaging industries are highly sensitive
to economic growth. When consumer spending rises, demand for packaging, labels,
and printed materials increases. Conversely, during economic downturns, demand
softens almost immediately. The book helps readers understand that these
patterns are part of broader economic cycles that have recurred throughout
Indonesia's history.
It also reinforces the idea that a company's resilience is
determined not only by its production capabilities but by its ability to adapt
to policy changes, economic shifts, and broader market conditions.
Strengths of the Book
- Written
in a clear and accessible style despite addressing complex macroeconomic
topics.
- Presents
a well-structured and chronological analysis of Indonesia's economic
history.
- Authored
by a respected economist who personally participated in key economic
policy decisions. [books.google.com],

- Offers
valuable lessons for business leaders seeking to understand economic
cycles.
- Effectively
explains the interconnected roles of economics, politics, and institutions
in national development. [books.google.com],

Areas for Improvement
From an industry practitioner's perspective, I would have
appreciated a more detailed discussion on how macroeconomic policies affected
specific manufacturing sectors, including medium-sized industries such as
printing and packaging. Since the book focuses primarily on macroeconomic
issues, readers looking for direct operational business guidance may find some
sections too broad.
Personal Conclusion
My rating: 9 out of 10.
For a professional who has spent more than 25 years in the
printing industry, this book successfully connects real-world business
experience with the broader context of Indonesia's economic history. Many
economic events that I experienced as an industry practitioner can be better
understood when viewed through the historical lens provided by Prof. Boediono.
In summary, the book reinforces a crucial lesson:
The success of an industry is not determined solely by
machinery, technology, or sales performance. It also depends on the ability to
understand economic policy, anticipate macroeconomic trends, and adapt to the
political and social dynamics that shape the market.
That, in my view, is the most valuable insight offered by
Prof. Dr. Boediono's remarkable work.
